it’s always difficult to put into words what i feel when i listen to a true artist’s music. it touches the depths of my soul, there is a flood of emotions that are indescribable, an overwhelming sense of peace but at the same time the heart is pounding. i suppose it’s falling in love with the artist’s finished piece. this is what jeff’s music does to me over and over. i am not a lunatic, just someone who can’t put into words what music does to me.

I love the exotic blues sound! I like it for the same reasons I love watching Star Wars in dolby digital 5.1 sound, it just sounds huge!!!

This new album is totally awesome. It’s a new and refreshing side to Jeff for people to see. I’m amazed at Jeff’s creativity in recording music. The ideas and lyrics he writes about are second to none. :) Love ya Jeff! Pick me! Jenni

I just picked up the new album at the show in Thunder Bay. I did listen to a lot of the radio interviews and to be honest I loved the ‘acoustic’ version he did of Riverland Rambler versus the ‘electric’. But I’m enjoying the disc – just listening to it now at work. Very much a return to some of the work of the Tea Party mid years. Definitely had some ‘blues’ influence over the years – which makes for a neat blend with your ‘morROCKcan ROLL’ you’ve always had.

First off, I need to note the simple but utterly menacing guitar riffs in “The Pyre” and “The Cobra”. “The Cobra” to be sounds as if it could’ve been on The Edges Of Twilight with it’s incredibly dark and seductive feel. Just leading you into temptation. I was almost expecting a reprise of the line “Please open the door, I need to see more” from “Luxuria” in this song. Definite highlight for me and the drums are Bonzo huge in this track.

As soon as I heard “The Pyre” was ‘Morocco Part II’ in which ‘they got her’ I got excited and for good reason. Great intro and even after multiple listens every time that riff comes in it scares the living hell out of me! And that riff is just massive. Another highlight with a dark, gloomy feel and ya gotta love the revenge lines in the second verse. Can’t help but wonder if Jeff will deal with them in a later song.. Top form.

The folkier tunes sounded fresh and I’d definitely say I preferred some to others.. “Queen Of Spades”, “1916″ and “Blue Mountain Sun” are highlights in that department. I can definitely see myself learning QOS in the near future and playing it at a kitchen party with its acoustic driven blues swagger. Was glad to hear an instrumental in BMS as well with a majestic feel reminiscent of both “In This Time” and “The Badger” which just completely puts your mind at ease.

I had heard that “She’s Leaving” was in a category with “These Living Arms”, “Release” and “Soulbreaking” which are some of my all-time favorites so I had high expectations for this song. I remember at first listen I was underwhelmed… but after I got through one listen through the CD I went and grabbed better headphones and went in again.. and my god what a song! Being able to clearly hear the Cantus intro really set the mood. After hearing the song again I went and listened to the original “Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten” and I both highly recommend and also condemn listening to this song before “She’s Leaving”.. just pure unadulterated sorrow seeping through and I found it to be an incredibly intense and haunting experience. Just dying of a broken heart… I was genuinely hit hard by this track which all of the Tea Party’s best did. Definitely on the level with those. The “Release” reprise at the end also helped put it over the top. Instant classic.

All in all this album feels balanced to me. There’s that signature JM sound with a taste of something new as well. I’ve always been drawn to the darker side of JM’s music and luckily there’s a good amount of that here.

I listened to the new CD multiple times before seeing Jeff in concert in Duncan and Victoria, BC. Absolutely love the CD and find most of the songs brilliant. My favorite is Cobra with its feeling of tantric seduction :-)

  8. Anything by Jeff is awesome can’t wait to see you perform live again in may!!

LOVE THIS ALBUM! I am a huge fan of The Tea Party and this style of music is more similar to why I fell in love with Jeff in the first place. Riverland Rambler, favorite song by far, followed by The Cobra, both wicked tunes. It was nice to hear some instrumentals back on this CD as well. Thanks for all the hard work on the new album, I haven’t taken it out of my cd player yet and I doubt I will for a long time.
